Be careful when you do this, because if there is wiring or plumbing behind the wall you could make a lot of trouble. There are a variety of drywall anchors that you can use for larger loads (see for a good list). (Many people don't patch, but you'll still see the hole when you repaint.) There's a limit to how much weight I'd want to put on nails in drywall, though - if it tears out, it's a mess.
You can pull the nail out when you're done and it will only leave a small hole that is easy to patch. Make sure the nail is angled 45 deg from vertical. They consist of a bolt with a metal sleeve around it. If you do this, first put a piece of scotch tape on the wall, to resist cracking. Molly bolts are an all-metal wall anchor that works extremely well in plaster. The snap toggle variety allows you to remove the bolt when needed without risking loss of the toggle on the other side. The downside to a normal toggle anchor is that you tend to have to put the whole assemply together before inserting the toggle into the wall. You need to push lightly on the drill so it will not simply turn the entire anchor, Once that happens the only way to remove is to use a nail punch and tap the top of the anchor into the wall surface until it can be covered with plaster. It's OK to use a nail to hang a framed painting or photograph. My go-to anchors for plaster are the Toggler snap toggle anchors. Drill slowly into the anchor until the head falls off of it. Nonpointed versions require an installation hole, and work well in old plaster-and-lath. The regular anchors are rated for up to 79 pounds, while the minis hold 65 pounds in. Molly bolts Pointed mollys can be tapped into place with a hammer.
Over time it will work its way out and leave a hole in the wall. The 50-pack of threaded anchors contains two sizes, regular and mini, each with 25 anchors and 25 screws. A screw directly in plaster or drywall is not very strong.
